Virginia is home to two medically significant spider species and several aggressive stinging insects. Both require professional treatment β not household sprays that scatter the problem.
(540) 386-4822The Shenandoah Valley's wooded ridgelines, agricultural fields, and abundant insect populations support a wide variety of spider species. Most are harmless β beneficial predators that you wouldn't notice if they weren't in your home. Two species require serious attention.
Present throughout Frederick County and the Winchester area. Shiny black with a red hourglass on the abdomen. Prefers dark, undisturbed spaces β garages, woodpiles, crawl spaces, storage boxes, and outdoor furniture. Their neurotoxic venom causes severe muscle pain and cramping. Medical attention required for bites.
Tan to brown with a violin-shaped marking. Hides in clothing, shoes, boxes, and rarely-disturbed wall voids. Their bite causes necrotic tissue damage that can take months to heal. Found throughout western Virginia β one sighting typically means many more nearby.
Wolf spiders, cellar spiders, and yellow sac spiders are common throughout the area and while not dangerous, their presence indicates general insect activity worth addressing.
The Winchester area's mix of older homes with void spaces, agricultural surroundings, and extensive wooded terrain creates excellent habitat for paper wasps, yellow jackets, and baldfaced hornets. All three build nests in and around residential structures and become increasingly aggressive as colonies grow through summer and peak in late August and September.
Yellow jackets are the most dangerous of the three β they nest in the ground and in wall voids, and the nests are frequently encountered accidentally. A single disturbed colony can deploy hundreds of stinging workers within seconds. Stings from yellow jackets are a leading cause of anaphylactic emergencies in the mid-Atlantic region.
Baldfaced hornets build the large papery aerial nests visible in trees and under eaves. These nests can contain over 400 workers by late summer. They are extremely aggressive when the nest is disturbed and will pursue perceived threats at significant distance.
Hardware store wasp spray applied to an active nest without proper protective equipment and knowledge of nest location creates a genuinely dangerous situation. We treat from the outside in β addressing the colony without exposing you to an emergency response.
