The Winchester area supports several significant ant species. Carpenter ants are the most structurally concerning — they excavate galleries in moisture-damaged wood and are common in older homes throughout Winchester's historic neighborhoods and in the wooded residential areas of Frederick County. A carpenter ant infestation often signals an underlying moisture problem.
Odorous house ants trail into kitchens year-round following moisture and food sources. Their colonies branch and scatter when disturbed by repellent sprays — hardware store products make these infestations worse, not better. Pavement ants colonize cracks in driveways and foundations throughout the area's residential neighborhoods.
The Shenandoah Valley's agricultural character means fire ants have established across much of Frederick County and the surrounding area. Their mounds appear in yards and garden beds and their stings are painful and potentially serious.
Repellent products cause colonies to split and relocate — converting one problem area into two or three. We use non-repellent baits that workers carry back to the queen, collapsing the entire colony from within.
German cockroaches are the primary indoor cockroach species in the Winchester area. They live entirely indoors — in the voids behind stoves, refrigerators, and under sinks — and reproduce rapidly. One female can produce over 30,000 descendants in a year. They require gel bait treatment placed in harborage areas, not broadcast sprays.
American cockroaches are the large reddish-brown species that enters through floor drains and foundation gaps. More common in Winchester's older homes and buildings near the historic district. Oriental cockroaches prefer cool, damp spaces — basements and crawl spaces — and are common in properties with older stone or brick foundations.
